Orange Juice - Tenterhook
When Rip It Up came out in 1982, I was a bit uncertain about it - it was a huge jump in production “values”, and I really didn’t like the slick 80s thing. It didn’t have the charm of You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever. Nonetheless, I grew to appreciate it, maybe cause I had to hold my ground against all my naysayer friends who hated Edwyn Collins’ voice. The production still bugs me a bit but there are several undeniably great songs on it. Tenterhook was the last song on the album and it appealed to me deeply in my most lovesick moments.
Don’t make any bones about it
You just tellllllllllllll me
There may be trace evidence - preserved in the craquelure.
- What? Craquelure.
It’s French for the cracks that appear on an oil painting as it dries and it becomes rigid with age.
Cracks are not always weaknesses. A life lived accrues in the cracks.
new order - love less
I spent a lifetime working on you
and you won’t even talk to me
Nothing will fuck up your twenties more than thinking you’re supposed to have your shit together.
